Undergraduate Research Fellowships and Community College Student Launch Program

Awards are made to undergraduate students to work with faculty on funded research at the level of $5,000 for two academic semesters. Students must re-apply each year.  In order to support as many students as possible, students receiving summer support from NM Space Grant maybe ranked lower in consideration for fellowship support. And, students receiving fellowship support from NM Space Grant maybe ranked lower in consideration for summer support.

 

  • Enrolled at: New Mexico State University (Main, Alamogordo, or Grants branch), University of New Mexico, New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, New Mexico Highlands University, Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute, San Juan Community College, Dona Ana Community College, Western New Mexico University, Eastern New Mexico University, Santa Fe Community College, Northern New Mexico, and Navajo Technical College
  • Evidence of declared major in the: 
      • College of Arts and Sciences (astronomy, biology, bio chemistry, chemistry, Earth & planetary science, Earth & environmental sciences, molecular biology, physics, computer science, earth science, mathmatical science, mathematics)
      • College of Engineering (chemical, civil, computer, electrical, environmental, industrial, materials and metallurgical, mechanical, mineral, nuclear, or engineering technology)
      • College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (animal and range sciences, entomology and plant pathology and weed science, fishery and wildlife sciences, plant and environmental sciences)
  • Full time status* Students participating in the Community College Student Launch program must be registered in related classes at DACC and SIPI.  Full time status is not required.
  • United States citizenship
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0

Fellowships are competitively awarded based on your application information including your research project, its alignment to NASA, your faculty recommendation, and your GPA.
* Students participating in the Community College Student Launch program will be awarded based on their participation in the Student Launch Class Project.

Application Requirements:

  • Description of the research you will be doing as part of this fellowship. The research topic must be related to NASA missions and Mission Directorates  (Aeronautics Research, Human Exploration and Operations, Science) *Students participating in the Community College Student Launch program meet this requirement with their pariticipation in the Student Launch Class.
  • NASA Mission Directorate Alignment - This is a critical part of the application. You must make a strong connection between your research and NASA's needs.   • Research/Career Interests
  • Relevant work or co-op experience, academic awards, and/or honors
  • Past or present financial aid
  • Letter of recommendation - This letter must be from the faculty with whom your are doing research. Your faculty must state that s/he is working with you on this research and why s/he is recommending you for this fellowship. * Students participating in the Community College Student Launch program meet this requirement with their pariticipation in the Student Launch Class.

Other Requirements:

  • Awarded students are required to present their research results, either at a research colloquium, conference, or journal paper.
  • Awarded students are required to complete up to 10 hours of community service.
  • Awarded students are required to update the NMSGC program office annually on their process from initial award through first employment.

 

If a student becomes ineligible or drops out of the program before completion, unused funds revert back to NMSGC.
